The children will be comparing and contrasting the Arctic and Antarctic regions, finding out about their location, similarities and differences and developing their mapping skills. They will also be finding out about Ernest Shackleton and his exploration of the Antarctic, looking in detail at exploration techniques of the early 20th century.
After starting the term with looking at the theme of remembrance through war poetry, the children will move on to creating their own diaries, informal letters, brochures and monologues using the theme of the Titanic.
In the second half of the term, the children will learn about Ernest Shackleton and his Antarctic adventures through creating formal letters, a news report and a formal report.
The children will be learning about and understanding the relationship between fractions, decimals and percentages. Linking to this, the children will do some work on measurement and time.
The children will be looking at the classification of living things including a study of Carl Linnaeus who introduced the idea of grouping all living things by specific features.
