Autumn 1 - Land Ahoy!

Our topic this half term is all about pirates!

We will be learning about a famous pirate and how he lived hundreds of years ago. We will be getting creative with our writing, pretending that we are a pirate on a ship writing home to our families! We will be doing lots of drama this half term, thinking about what it would have been like to live as a pirate and might even get to go on a treasure hunt! We will be learning all about the sinking of The Titanic an in D&T children are going to be exploring mechanisms and the use of pull levers to create a pop-up book of the story of The Titanic. Children will also be learning about an extremely famous explorer and becoming explorers themselves in order to learn all about the countries in the United Kingdom and the continents in the world.

Keep an eye on this page to see what we get up to!

We have been enjoying learning about place value in Maths! We have been using lots of manipulatives including tens frames, numicon, base ten and place value counters to help our understanding.

In Science this week we have been learning all about floating and sinking. We looked at different objects, identified the material they were made from, predicted whether we thought they would float or sink and then conducted the experiment. Lots of us were surprised by the result - especially cotton wool!

Over the last few weeks we have enjoyed learning all about addition and subtraction in Maths. We have been using concrete resources such as numicon, base 10 and place value counters to help us, and then have moved on to drawing representations!

This half term in D&T we have been creating our own moving pictures! We chose a section of the story of 'The Titanic', decided on what our part would look like and which part needed to move, then decided how to place the slider so it would move. Here are our final pictures!
