Subject Vision

At Earl Spencer Primary School, we want our pupils to develop their fluency in reading and provide opportunities for them to develop their vocabularies so that they are more-able to access a wider range of texts and expand their horizons to a world outside of school. As a result of this, we make reading a priority in school and immerse our children in a reading rich environment and expose them to a wide and varied reading experience. As a school, we understand the pressures of social deprivation and the impact this can have on resources at home and the scope that families have to effectively support the many aspects of school life. In recognition of this, we strive to ensure that all children have access to a high quality reading experience that will enable them to reach their full potential while at Earl Spencer Primary and prepare them effectively for the next stage in their educational journey. We want children to enjoy reading the wide range of texts that they experience at school. By guiding children to reflect on the texts they have read in terms of their own likes and dislikes we feel that children will become more able to select their own texts more effectively in the future which will help in fostering an enjoyment of reading. We also want our children to see that reading has a purpose, that it is an important life skill and that an ability to read will serve them well and improve their life chances. As part of this, we want the children to understand that reading is not always from a book.

Intent

For children to become enthusiastic and motivated readers - to develop children’s confidence in reading a wide variety of genres and text types - for children to have the skills to decode words in order to be able to read fluently with understanding of what they have read.  - to encourage a love of literature and an enjoyment of reading for pleasure - to use reading to provoke thought within children

Implementation

Our whole curriculum is shaped by our school vision, which aims to enable all children, regardless of background, ability, additional needs, to flourish to become the very best version of themselves they can possibly be.  We teach the National Curriculum, supported by a clear skills and knowledge progression. This ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year on year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all children.  We have a skills based approach to reading using VIPERS skills within regular whole class guided reading lessons, and daily reading. In early KS1, there is a greater emphasis on phonics; this applied throughout the rest of the school to consolidate learning. Within daily phonic sessions, children have the opportunity to revisit previous learning, practise and apply new skills in structured but engaging ways.  We encourage reading for pleasure through children having a choice of challenging and enriching texts as well as building in time for children to read independently and as part of a whole class.  All children have daily opportunities to read a variety of material in school, including regularly with an adult. 

Impact

Regardless of background, ability or additional needs, by the time children leave Earl Spencer Primary, they will:  - be enthusiastic and motivated readers who are confident and will enjoy reading a wide variety of genres and text types  - have the skills to decode words in order to be able to read fluently with a secure understanding of what they have read - be inspired by literature and will read for pleasure
